A parte il modo in cui avete lavorato sulle canzoni, riarrangiandole rispettando la loro essenza, ciò che mi ha affascinato di più guardando il live è stata la scenografia del palcoscenico. L'ho trovata davvero fantastica, molto intima, con questo albero stile "Opposite" al centro del palco. Mi ha ricordato quelle calde sere d'estate, quando ti incontri con i tuoi amici più stretti e state lì a scambiarvi le vostre storie di vita. Da dove è venuta questa idea? Che sentimenti volevate trasmettere?
Simon: Esattamente quelli!
James: Volevamo che la location fosse come casa nostra e far vivere un'esperienza magnifica alle persone che sarebbero venute a vederci suonare - dal momento in cui avessero varcato la porta, avrebbero potuto percepire il nostro impegno. Sì, ci siamo ispirati un po' all'immagine di "amici accampati intorno al fuoco" ma non esattamente. Diciamo che ci siamo ispirati molto ai Nirvana, abbiamo voluto ricordare la loro performance, con i fiori e le candele. Peccato che le norme di sicurezza sono un po' cambiate negli ultimi 25 anni - non eravamo pronti per le candele! [Ride, NdR.] Come hai detto tu, l'albero è un riferimento al nostro album "Opposite". Ma poiché il palazzo ha un aspetto così industriale, ci piaceva dare un tocco organico al palco, e farlo sentire come se fosse una cosa vivente, che respirasse, con ragnetti, vermi e insettini vari. Ci siamo sentiti come se effettivamente avessimo preso possesso della location e come se la natura stesse per prendere il sopravvento. Ci siamo ritrovati a spostare insetti dalle braccia o dalla faccia durante il live! [Ride, NdR.] E' stato molto bello.
Con il vostro ultimo album avete affermato con forza, in un certo senso, l'energica anima rock dei Biffy Clyro, poi sottolineata dai vostri spettacoli nelle arene e nelle location affollate da gente che balla, canta e si scatena. Personalmente ricordo il vostro show a Milano! Ho perso tutti i capelli!
Simon [Ride, NdR.]: Quello show a Milano è stato spettacolare, ci siamo divertiti molto!
Ma presumo che il tour per l'MTV Unplugged sarà leggermente diverso. Quali sono le vostre aspettative in termini di reazione del pubblico?
James: A Milano, visto il pubblico, probabilmente sarà pazzesco, proprio come un rock show [Ride, NdR.]! I fan a Milano sono assolutamente scatenati. Credo che canteranno e salteranno dalle sedie comunque, forse ci sarà un po' di casino quindi gli dovremmo dire di darsi una calmata. Speriamo di portarli in un bel viaggio e di romanticizzarli con la musica piuttosto che "picchiarli in faccia" come facciamo di solito in altri rock show.
Simon: Il nostro intento è quello di far sentire la gente a casa. Come se andassi a casa dei Biffy una sera a suonare un po' di canzoni, noi vogliamo che la gente si senta rilassata perché di solito creiamo un'atmosfera abbastanza intensa, perché siamo sempre pronti a fare casino. Quindi speriamo che questa volta sia l'opposto, come se fossimo una comunità o una chiesa figa.
Sono sicura che i fan apprezzeranno molto questo ultimo album, ma sono anche sicura che vorrebbero sapere se già avete cominciato a lavorare su dei pezzi per un nuovo album... Che piani avete in questo senso?
Simon: Siamo nel bel mezzo dell'incisione di un album, che diventerà un film. Praticamente stiamo facendo un album che poi il nostro direttore trasformerà in un film. Non in un musical o in un'opera rock però. E' la storia di una ragazza che perde il padre e cerca di ritrovare se stessa. Abbiamo scritto la musica per questa storia e adesso gireranno il film basato sulla musica. L'album parla del viaggio che intraprenderà dopo aver perso suo padre, e come lei riscoprirà la sua identità. In pratica è l'opposto di "The Wall"! [Ride, NdR.]. Si chiama "Il Vicolo Cieco" [Ride, NdR.]. Stiamo anche lavorando al nostro ottavo album. Quindi al momento siamo concentrati su ben due album. Il disco-film sarà completato per luglio e spero uscirà per settembre o ottobre; mentre l'ottavo album avrà 12 canzoni e cominceremo ad inciderlo alla fine di questo anno. Quindi 2 album. Se siete pazienti, sarete accontentati molto presto.
Ma voi, vi riposate mai?
Simon [Ride, NdR.]: No, questo in realtà è come ci rilassiamo solitamente! Questo è il nostro passatempo! Questa è la cosa strana che succede quando il tuo mestiere è anche il tuo passatempo, è sempre quello che fai per rilassarti.

Simon: Dopo 5 anni stavo impazzendo, non so come facciano a resistere le ragazze. Ci si mette tantissimo a lavarli e asciugarli. Sono un uomo nuovo, adesso. Libero! [Ride, NdR.]
Quale canzone dei Biffy Clyro è la vostra preferita?
Simon: God Only Knows! [Ride, Gioco di parole per indicare non solo la loro cover della canzone ma anche per l’espressione "Solo Dio Lo Sa") NdR.]
James: Sono le nuove canzoni che fanno più scalpore. Ma per me, ritornerei a "Living As A Problem", solo per ciò che ha significato per noi in quel momento nelle nostre vite. L'ambizione del pezzo, gli elementi orchestrali; quando eravamo a New York a sentire gli archi e il coro che venivano aggiunti per la prima volta in sottofondo, increduli che quella fosse realmente la nostra band. Ed è diventata un pezzo della nostra vita, come qualsiasi buona canzone. E' sempre presente nella scaletta e abbiamo l'opportunità di suonarla spesso. Adoro come l'inizio possa giocare scherzi sulla mente della gente, ma dietro tutta quella pazzia c'è una bellissima canzone.
Ben: "God and Satan" è quella che viene in mente a me. Una delle prima canzoni in cui - credo che essendo batterista, per me il testo passa sempre in secondo piano - il testo mi ha davvero intrigato e ho pensato 'Allora è vero che Simon è un grande'.

Besides the rearrangement of the songs, I was fascinated by the stage scenery. I find it very intimate and amazing, with this kind of "Opposite" tree in the centre of the stage. It reminds me a warm summer evening surrounded by nature and your closest friends exchanging stories. Where did this idea come from? What kind of feelings do you want to convey?
Simon: Exactly that!
James: We wanted the venue to feel like it was ours for the evening, like the people who were coming to see us play were gonna get a real experience from the moment they walked into the door and could tell we’d made a real effort. We were kind of inspired by that ideal ‘around the campfire with your friends’ but not exactly. And also looking back to Nirvana’s performance, with all the flowers and the candles - I think health and safety has changed in the last 25 years - we weren’t ready to have the candles bit! As you said the tree looks back to our "Opposite" record. But with the building having such an industrial feel, it was nice to have that organic quality on stage, and feeling like a living-breathing thing with spiders and worms and beasties going around everywhere. We really felt like we’d taken over the venue for the evening and nature was coming back to take over. It was just really sweet.
With your last record you remarked in a way the energetic rock soul of Biffy Clyro, underlined in your shows in arenas and venues crowded by people dancing, singing and running wild. I personally remember your show in Milan! I lost all my hair!
Simon: That Milan show was so much fun, it was amazing!(Laughs ED)
But I guess the MTV Unplugged tour will be a little different. What are your expectations in terms of fan's reactions?
James: I think in Milan it might be as crazy as a rock show! The people in Milan are absolutely passionate. I think that there’s gonna be a lot of singing and possibly some people getting off their seats and getting a little bit too crazy and possibly have to tell them to calm down. Hopefully we’ll try taking them on a nice journey and romance them as opposed to slap them across the face as we usually do in other rock shows.
Simon: It should feel like someone’s coming round to the house. Like you’re coming round to Biffy’s house for the evening and you play a few songs, we want everyone to feel relaxed cause normally we like to have an intense atmosphere, because we’re normally ready to fucking go. So hopefully it will be the exact opposite, like we’re a community or a cool Church.
I’m sure this album will be much appreciated by your fans, but I’m also quite sure that they want to know if you have already started writing some new music, working on a new album... So, what about your plans concerning a new record?
Simon: We’re currently in the middle of recording an album, which is going to be a movie. We’re making an album which then our director is going to make a film out of. Not like a musical or a rock opera. It’s the tale of a girl who loses her dad and it’s about her trying to find herself. We have then written the music to that story and now they will film the movie to the music. This girl starts a journey after losing her dad and how she finds herself and her identity. So it’s the opposite of "The Wall"! (everyone laughs ED). It’s called the "Cul de Sac" (laughs ED). Also, we’re working on our 8th album as well. We’re working on two albums at the moment. The movie record will be finished in July and hopefully out in September-October, and the 8th album will have 12 songs and we’ll start recording that at the end of this year. So currently 2 albums, lots to come out. If everyone’s patient, hopefully they’ll be very happy soon.
Do you ever have time to chill?
Simon: No this is how we relax! This is our hobby! That’s the weird thing when your hobby becomes your job, so it’s still what you do to relax.

Simon this is for you: why did you cut your hair?
Simon: Because it’s summer and I sweat! It’s so fucking hot!

Simon: After 5 years it was doing my head in, I don’t know how girls do it. It takes so long to wash and dry! I’m a new man. Liberated!
What is your favorite Biffy Clyro song?
Simon: "God Only Knows"! (Pun intended ED)
James: It’s the new ones that excite the most, but I think for me I’d go back to "Living As A Problem", just because of what it signified to us at that point in our lives. The ambition of it, the orchestration of it. When we were in New York and hearing the strings and the choir in the back for the first time almost not believing that it was our band. And it’s become a part of our life, like all good songs do. It’s always in the set and we can get a chance to play it. I love the way it can mess with people’s minds at the start, but it’s a beautiful song hidden amongst all the madness.
Ben: "God and Satan" sticks in my mind - just being one of the first songs I heard where - I’m always a music guy where lyrics always come later for me being a drummer I guess - but that song’s lyrics really peaked my interest and I was like Simon’s greatness is seriously possible.
