Ok, partiamo! Ho incontrato Leo tre o quattro anni fa, sinceramente non ricordo la data esatta, so che eravamo in tour insieme, la mia band Lords Of Black era di supporto alle date spagnole del tour dei Gotthard. Venne a complimentarsi per la mia voce, mi regalò dei preziosi consigli sul mondo della musica e nacque immediatamente una bellissima amicizia. Per puro caso avevamo lo stesso booking management, e un anno fa Leo mi chiamò per raccontarmi di questo nuovo progetto che aveva in mente. In un attimo mi ritrovai in Svizzera a casa sua, a parlare dei Gotthard, di Steve Lee e dei primi album della band. Da lì è successo tutto molto in fretta: siamo entrati in studio, abbiamo registrato alcune canzoni e ne siamo rimasti davvero soddisfatti. E' un progetto che ci porta molta felicità, abbiamo messo sul tavolo sentimenti forti e tanto rock'n'roll e oggi siamo qui a provare per i prossimi concerti insieme, pazzesco!
E cosa esattamente proporrete al pubblico durante i concerti?
L'intento è quello di tributare gli "early days" dei Gotthard, suonando solo pezzi dai loro primi tre album, ma c'è anche una canzone nuova di zecca mai pubblicata prima! Vedremo cosa accadrà e cosa ne penseranno i fan!
Torniamo alla scorsa estate, quando insieme a Mike Terrana e Magnus Karlsson hai pubblicato il primo album eponimo dei "The Ferrymen", un progetto melodic metal che ha ricevuto una pioggia di critiche positive. Sai, spesso noi fan davanti a questo tipo di uscite abbiamo delle sensazioni contrastanti non per via della qualità artistica del lavoro in sè, piuttosto perchè finiamo quasi subito per chiederci "chissà se poi suoneranno mai insieme dal vivo?" Pensi che potremmo sorprenderci questa volta?
Beh, è sicuramente un'idea, quella di suonare live insieme. Ci abbiamo pensato anche insieme a Frontiers, la nostra etichetta, ma ora come ora non sono certo si possa fare, più che altro perchè sia io che Mike Terrana abbiamo un'agenda fittissima nei prossimi mesi, e so che Magnus sta scrivendo per il prossimo album dei Primal Fear. Vedremo che succederà, i fan hanno amato il nostro primo album e abbiamo un deal con Frontiers per pubblicarne un secondo quindi... Io poi adoro il lavoro di Magnus, lo seguo dai suoi esordi, e adorerei portare in vita questi pezzi, suonarli dal vivo. Chissà...magari in una prossima edizione della versione Metal del Frontiers Festival!
So che sei un grande fan di band come Toto, Kansas, Journey. Essere il cantante di tante band così diverse tra loro (Rainbow, Lords Of Black, CoreLeoni, The Ferrymen) ti crea difficoltà di approccio al canto soprattutto nel cambiare stile così spesso?
A volte è difficile. Sai, i cantanti hanno bisogno di molto riposo. Ma la mia carriera oggi come oggi è esattamente al punto in cui sognavo di arrivare. Ho fondato i Lords Of Black quattro o cinque anni fa dandomi degli obiettivi molto ambiziosi, e poi di colpo questa enorme opportunità coi Rainbow. Mi piace fare cose molto diverse tra loro, tenermi occupatissimo; sono un tipo estremamente energico! Se poi mi soffermo a pensare quanti altri cantanti possono dire di avere l'opportunità di dividere il palco coi Rainbow, e con Leo Leoni dei Gotthard? Come potrei non essere felice?
Qual è la tua canzone preferita da cantare?
Adoro il mio lavoro coi Rainbow, sono sempre stato un loro grande fan così come della produzione dei Deep Purple, anche mio padre era un loro grande fan, quindi adoro cantare le loro canzoni. E poi c'è la mia band, i Lords Of Black, e ho un legame speciale con ogni nostro pezzo, ma questo nuovo progetto con Leo...sento che c'è qualcosa di diverso e di molto speciale. E‘ esattamente il tipo di musica che ho sempre sognato di interpretare, e se dovessi scegliere la mia canzone preferita da cantare ti direi "Firedance" o "Let it be" dei Gotthard.
La prossima domanda riguarda i Rainbow: essere il frontman di una band che coi suoi pezzi ha scritto la storia del rock ti mette in una posizione molto difficile. Qual è stato il complimento più bello che ti hanno fatto in proposito?
Sai, cerco sempre di comprendere e motivare le critiche, ci sono così tante persone che parlano di questa mia "posizione scomoda" ogni singolo giorno: ad alcuni piaccio, ad altri per niente, credo sia normale. Però c'è un commento che ricordo nitidamente e che custodisco nel mio cuore: era uno dei primi show con i Rainbow, e un fan venne da me a fine concerto e mi disse "grazie per aver riportato Ritchie alla musica rock". Non aveva nulla a che vedere con la mia performanca vocale, ma piuttosto era riferito al significato più profondo di tutta la situazione, perchè la gente aspettava con ansia che Ritchie tornasse a fare del rock e penso che questo sia un bellissimo complimento!
Qual è la domanda che ti ha davvero stufato e che continuano a farti a proposito dei Rainbow?
Ah, beh, ci sono alcune domande che si ripetono frequentemente: posso capirlo, la gente è curiosa di sapere. Com'è successo? Come ti hanno contattato? Ma la domanda che davvero mi imbarazza di più e che vorrei davvero evitare in futuro è a proposito del presunto caratteraccio di Ritchie. Sembra che la gente sia assolutamente convinta che lavorare con lui sia un incubo, che sia una persona impossibile da gestire, ma accidenti no!
Ok, preso nota! Speriamo nessuno riproponga la domanda in futuro ora che lo abbiamo messo per iscritto! Invece dimmi, qual è stata l'emozione più forte che hai provato esibendoti coi Rainbow?
Sai, io sono un tipo molto calmo, tranquillo, difficilmente mi agito, non succede nemmeno prima di uno show, nei momenti poco prima di salire sul palco, ma una sera, stavo cantando "Stargazer" ad occhi chiusi, e mi sono ritrovato a lasciar libera la mia voce di eseguire alcuni vocalizzi improvvisati lasciando sgorgare tutti i sentimenti che stavo provando. Quando è finita la canzone ho aperto gli occhi e ho guardato il pubblico: erano tutti commossi dall'intensità della mia performance, so che per i fan dei Rainbow si tratta di una canzone speciale, mi sono venuti i brividi, un'emozione pazzesca.
Facciamo un altro passo indietro: so che sei cresciuto a pane e musica. Tuo nonno suonava il sax, i tuoi genitori erano entrambi cantanti e tuo fratello suona la batteria. Qual è il tuo ricordo più bello legato alla musica?
I primi tempi, quando ancora adolescente iniziai a suonare con la mia prima band insieme ai miei compagni di scuola facevamo solo piccoli club, suonando le classiche cover dei Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Credence Clearwater Revival; ricordo il supporto incondizionato della mia famiglia, specialmente quello di mio padre che ci portava in giro per locali, si occupava della strumentazione e passava le serate fuori dai locali ad aspettare che finissimo per poi riaccompagnarci tutti a casa; questo tipo di supporto per un musicista che inizia ad affrontare il mondo della musica è estremamente importante. Ho moltissimi cari ricordi che riguardano tutto ciò che ha fatto mio padre per me.
Qual è la lezione più importante che hai imparato da tutte le collaborazioni illustri che hai accumulato?
Ecco che torna in scena Leo Leoni! Durante le date spagnole del loro tour aprivamo le serate coi Lords Of Black, e Leo ci stava a sentire. L'ultima sera del tour venne da me e mi disse: "Ronnie, la tua band è davvero fantastica, a siete tutti degli ottimi musicisti, ma ci sono troppe informazioni nella vostra musica! Pensa alla parola "amore", sono solo 5 lettere e significa tutto". Ci ho riflettuto moltissimo: quando poi ci siamo rincontrati lo scorso anno ho voluto ringraziarlo per il consiglio, perchè avevo compreso appieno il senso della sua considerazione. A volte la musica è un messaggio molto semplice.
Mi racconti la storia del tatuaggio che sfoggi sull'avambraccio? Sono le lyric della canzone dei Rainbow, giusto? "We believed we'd catch the rainbow Ride the wind to the sun"?
Si, di "Catch the Rainbow", ed è anche una storia piuttosto divertente! Non avevo neppure un tatuaggio prima di imbarcarmi nell'avventura con Ritchie Blackmore, e lui e sua moglie Candice me lo facero notare quando mi scelsero perchè gli piaceva la mia aria da bravo ragazzo, così normale e dalla faccia pulita. Insomma il giorno prima dello show a Birmingham due anni fa, io, il batterista e il corista andammo in uno studio di tatuaggi a farci questo, in segno di commemorazione della meravigliosa esperienza, assolutamente certi che si trattasse di una di quelle cose che capitano solo una volta nella vita. Il giorno del concerto durante il soundcheck Ritchie se ne accorse e non ne fu molto contento; una volta tornato a Madrid cominciai a farmene altri, e quest'anno, tornati in Inghilterra con Ritchie andai di nuovo in quello studio e pensa la faccia di Ritchie quando li notò a cena prima del concerto! Mi ha guardò con la faccia scura e con un tono solenne mi disse: "ti sei fatto altri tatuaggi, non stai bene così". Ops!

Did you know that Ritchie Blackmore does not like tattos? And that the best advice received from Ronnie was addressed to him by a certain Leo Leoni from Gotthard? This and much more, including many anticipations and some moving memories in our latest chat with Ronnie Romero, undisputed vocal talent chosen by his highness Ritchie Blackmore for his return with the legendary band Rainbow.
Ronnie, I would love to take our readers on a music journey going from your present activities to the very beginning of it all. Today I've seen you having a lot of fun with Leo Leoni in Lugano while rehearsing the songs of your new project CoreLeoni ("The Greatest Hits, Part I" will be out on February 23, 2018 for Frontiers Music). Tell us what is this new band about!
Well, let's go! I met Leo three or four years ago, I honestly can't remember. We were touring with my band Lords of Black presenting our first album, having the amazing opportunity to support some Gotthard shows in Spain. He told me how much he loved my voice, sharing some very nice advice about music and almost immediately a great friendship was born. We happened to share the same booking management and one year ago Leo called me and we talked about this new project he had in mind, and right after I came to Switzerland at Leo's house and we found ourselves talking about Gotthard, Steve Lee, their early days music: it happened very quickly, we got into the studio, recorded some songs being extremely happy with the results. It basically is a very happy project, we brought happiness, feelings and rock'n'roll to the table and today we're here rehearsing for three shows!
And what are you gonna play for the audience?
We wanna try to pay tribute to the Gotthard's early days, songs from the first three albums, but also one unreleased brand new song and then we're gonna see what happens with the fans who will enjoy our shows!
Let's go back to last summer, when you joined forces with Mike Terrana and Magnus Karlsson and released "The Ferrymen", a melodic metal project which was highly praised by reviewers around the world. Many times this kind of collaborations tend to disappoint the fans, not because of the quality of the work itself but because we do know such busy personalities will hardly be able to perform live together. Are we going to be surprised this time?
Well, obviously playing live is an idea. We've been putting together ideas with Frontiers from the beginning, but right now I'm not sure about it, cause I have an extremely tight schedule and Mike Terrana too; not to mention the fact that Magnus is already writing new songs for the new Primal Fear album. We will see what happens with this, people loved the first album and we have a deal with Frontiers to release a second one. I really love Magnus' music, I've been a fan of his work from the very beginning, I really hope to be able to bring these Ferrymen songs to life on stage, I tried to bring all my passion and my personal style in it. Maybe in the future we'll manage to play live, who knows, maybe at some Metal edition of the Frontiers Festival!
You are a huge fan of bands like Toto, Kansas and Journey. Being the lead singer of so many different bands (Rainbow, Lords Of Black, CoreLeoni, The Ferrymen) do you find it hard or feel challenged to change your approach to singing so often?
Sometimes it's difficult... you know singers need time to take some rest. But my career right now is exactly what I was dreaming of. I started Lords Of Black four or five years ago setting certain goals, and then this incredible opportunity with Rainbow happened and I feel like I really love doing so many different things, cause I am very energetic, I need to feel busy all the time! If I think about it I say wow, how many other musicians can tell "I am playing with Rainbow, and Leo Leoni from Gotthard" and how could I not be happy with this!
Which is your favorite song to sing?
I love my work with Rainbow, I am a very big fan of Rainbow and Deep Purple, my father was a fan too, so I really love singing their songs. On the other hand I love my band Lords Of Black and every single song we wrote but with this new project and Leo...I feel something so special and very different. This is exactly the kind of music I've always wanted to sing. However, if I have to pick just one song I would say "Firedance" or "Let it be" from Gotthard.
Next question is about Rainbow: being the lead singer of a band whose songs wrote history you find yourself in very a difficult position. Which is the best compliment someone gave you being the voice of Rainbow?
Well I always try to understand and motivate critics but there are so many people talking about me being in this position every single day: some do like me, some other don't, it's very normal I guess. There is a comment I can remember very well and treasure in my heart: it was from the first shows, a guy told me "thank you very much for bringing Ritchie Blackmore to the Rock music again". This was not about my performance, was about the deep meaning of this adventure, people wanted so bad Ritchie to go back to rock n roll and I think it's a great compliment!
Which is the question you would never want to answer again about Rainbow?
Oh, well, there are a lot of questions repeating every single time. I can understand, people want to know how things happened, like "how did they contact you?" and so on, but the specific question that I always try to avoid is about Ritchie's behaviour. Looks like people have this idea that working with him is difficult, that he is a hard guy to handle...Damn, no! He's not a hard guy at all, but every single person seems to think the same and keep asking me about it!
Ok, so now that we wrote it down once and for all let's hope nobody else will ask this! I wanna know which is the biggest and most intense emotion you felt playing with Rainbow.
I am a very quiet guy, I never get nervous, even before shows, waiting backstage, I never lose my mind, but one night, I was performing "Stargazer" with my eyes closed, letting my voice reaching free notes and all my feelings were pouring: as the song ended I opened my eyes and looked at the audience moved by the intensity of it all, because of course this is a very special song for the Rainbow fans and it gave me chills. Such a huge emotion.
My best memory is from my early teens when I started my first band in Chile with my school mates; we use to play small local clubs, doing classic rock covers like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Credence Clearwater Revival. And I remeber so well the unconditional support from my family, especially my dad, who drove us around, bought the instruments, used to wait outside till the end of the show; that kind of support for a musician that's starting to face this music industry is extremely important. I have so many beloved memories about him and everything he did for me.
Which is the best lesson you learned from all these collaborations with huge rockstars?
Here's Mr Leo Leoni again! During our time supporting Gotthard's Spanish tour with Lords Of Black, Leo used to watch our show. On the last day of the tour, we were backstage, he came to me and told me: "Ronnie, your band is great, you're very talented musicians, but there's to much information in your music. Think about the word LOVE. It's just four simple letters and it means everything". I've been thinking a lot about this, and when we met again one year ago I thanked him for the advice, cause I understand much better now what he meant. Sometimes music is a very simple message.
Talking about Rainbow.. tell me the story of the tattoo on your forearm, is it the song's lyrics "We believed we'd catch the rainbow Ride the wind to the sun"?
Yes, it's the Rainbow song "Catch the Rainbow", and it's a very funny story. I didn't have any tattoo before the Rainbow shows began and one of the things that Candice and Ritchie told me while picking me for the job was that I really looked like a "regular guy", so normal and clean, without any tattoo; then the day before the Birmingham show, two years ago, me and the drummer and the backing singer went to a tattoo shop to get this tattoo in order to commemorate the amazing experience being absolutely sure there was not gonna be more in the future, like it had been a once in a lifetime experience. On the day of the Birmingham show we went to do the soundcheck and Ritchie noticed my tattoo and was not very happy but after that I went back to Madrid and made many more cause I just love them! So this year after the shows in UK we went back to the tattoo shop and I made some more and while having dinner before the show with Ritchie he told me very seriously: "you got new tattoo... you're not looking good with them". And I was like oops! (Laugh, Ed.)
And what about now? Apart from these gigs coming up with CoreLeoni, what are your plans in the near future?
Well after these rehearsals I'm gonna leave for Madrid and then I will fly to Russia for a Lords of Black gig next weekend and we have to finish the new album soon. I will try to rest a bit at the end of the year, because in April 2018 there will be more Rainbow shows, and then again Lords of Black and CoreLoeni during the summer for some summer festival: a very busy schedule indeed. And but this is still to confirm there's a chance we will play some more shows with Rainbow besides the ones in April...
