Iniziamo subito parlando del vostro nuovo disco. "Omega: Bestia"è uscito da pochi giorni, come vi sentite a riguardo?
Entusiasti e non vediamo l'ora di ricevere il feedback dalla gente. Abbiamo trascorso un lungo periodo con l'album che era già finito, ma non pubblicato, quindi eravamo tutti un po' impazienti di farlo uscire finalmente.
Come avete lavorato alla registrazione di "Omega: Bestia"? Le restrizioni dovute alla pandemia vi hanno costretto ad apportare alcune modifiche al processo?
Non tanto per la creazione dell'album, ma solo per il fatto che abbiamo dovuto posticiparne l'uscita. Per i video invece è stato un problema perchè abbiamo dovuto far fronte ad alcune restrizioni che, limitando le possibilità di filmare, hanno reso le cose più difficili.
Se lo paragoniamo a "Bloodwinter", in "Omega: Bestia" gli elementi più roboanti vengono quasi messi da parte, mentre c'è un approccio più diretto e potente. Pensate che il nuovo disco sia quello con il songwriting più influenzato dall'heavy metal?
Questa impressione è dovuta al fatto che questa volta abbiamo usato meno orchestrazioni. Hai ragione, volevamo renderlo più ruvido e pesante rispetto a "Bloodwinter", con una maggiore attenzione ai riff di chitarra.
Naturalmente, gli aspetti epici e di marca pagan sono sempre presenti. Pensi che essere nati in Germania abbia facilitato la costruzione di questi suoni e temi?
Forse inconsciamente. Riesco a trovare queste influenze autoctone anche nel sound di band provenienti da altri Paesi. Forse è una sorta di condizionamento che proviene dalla tradizione e dalla musica locale, ma non c'era alcuna reale intenzione di farlo suonare in quel modo. In effetti, quando abbiamo iniziato a scrivere l'album non eravamo davvero sicuri di quale sarebbe stato l'esito finale, perché avevamo alcuni nuovi membri che hanno preso parte al songwriting. Sapevamo solo che sarebbe stato di nuovo un po' diverso rispetto al passato.
Nel moniker, come nell'artwork di molti vostri dischi, il lupo è una presenza costante. Cosa rappresenta per voi metaforicamente questo animale?
Libertà, selvatichezza, natura e grazia.
Utilizzate sia l'inglese che il tedesco per i testi. Perché avete deciso di cantare in entrambi gli idiomi? Come scegliete la lingua più adatta per una canzone?
Riceviamo spesso questa domanda. La risposta è che da un lato ci piacciono entrambi i modi e dall'altro è una specie di marchio di fabbrica. Dipende anche dalla canzone stessa. Alcuni testi semplicemente si adattano meglio alla nostra lingua madre, quindi possiamo esprimere le cose in modo più emotivo e approfondire la questione.
"Mit Wut und mit Stolz schlage ich ein wie ein Komet": questo ritornello di una canzone travolgente come "Komet" sembra una dichiarazione di battaglia. Contro cosa o chi?
La canzone "Komet" racconta più o meno la storia di un culto nato quando degli uomini scoprirono vecchie profezie secondo cui una cometa avrebbe portato loro fortuna e ricchezza. L'avidità li rese ciechi e si accorsero troppo tardi che la cometa era in realtà un'entità intelligente, ma furiosa, e che alla fine distrusse la Terra. La frase che citi in realtà dice che non dovresti giocare con forze incontrollabili perché non sai cosa potresti provocare.
"Der Geist Und Die Dunkelheit" è sicuramente la canzone più suggestiva e complessa della tracklist, con molti cambi di tempo e parti corali impressionanti. Secondo te, è questa la traccia più rappresentativa del disco?
Questa canzone è la più rappresentativa per raccontare una breve storia all'interno di un'atmosfera molto epica. L'intenzione era creare immagini nella testa degli ascoltatori. Ovviamente ciò potrebbe funzionare meglio per le persone che capiscono il tedesco. La vicenda è stata ispirata dal film "Spiriti Nelle Tenebre" con Val Kilmer e Michael Douglas, ma raccontata attraverso gli occhi dei due leoni.
Le canzoni sembrano essere legate da un concept e penso che ciò sia particolarmente evidente in "Into Eternal Darkness" e "Out In The Dark". Puoi dirci qualcosa su questo?
"Into Eternal Darkness" è soltanto una corsa selvaggia nell'oscurità che descrive la follia dell'universo in cui le leggi della natura vengono abrogate o invertite. È oltre la nostra concezione e questa cosa fa impazzire l'uomo. Anche l'oscurità, come l'ignoto, può essere un rifugio. In "Out In The Dark", una creatura oppressa fugge nei boschi notturni dalla prigionia. Sente che le sue origini sono lì e cerca la libertà e la sua specie.
Il vostro precedente album "Bloodwinter" è stato pubblicato nel 2017 e nello stesso periodo il vostro chitarrista Eddy Groß è purtroppo scomparso. Come avete affrontato la situazione per uscire da questo tragico momento e ricominciare tutto da capo? Quanto è stato difficile mettere insieme un nuovo disco pochi anni dopo?
È stato un periodo molto triste e scioccante per tutti noi. Abbiamo deciso di andare avanti dopo la morte di Eddie perché quella volta eravamo già iscritti in alcuni grandi festival. Nel 2018 abbiamo avuto bisogno di una pausa anche per altri problemi personali. A quel tempo non era chiaro il nostro futuro, se andare avanti e registrare un nuovo album. Tuttavia si è rivelata una pausa con cui ci siamo ripresi e abbiamo raccolto le nostre forze per tornare.
Attualmente i concerti dal vivo non possono svolgersi, ma c'è una band con cui vorreste suonare in futuro? E dove? Forse in Italia?
Non direi che ce n'è una in particolare, ma ovviamente conosciamo molti amici e band che vorremmo incontrare di nuovo. Ci manca festeggiare e bere qualcosa insieme dopo gli spettacoli come ai bei vecchi tempi, quando il virus non esisteva.
Quali sono le vostre speranze per il 2021 e per il futuro?
Tornare alla vita normale, facendo concerti, divertendoci e celebrando la nostra musica. È tutto ciò di cui abbiamo bisogno.

Oh, very good thank you.
Let's start talking about your new record straight away! "Omega: Bestia" was released a few days ago, how do you feel about it?
Excited and we're looking forward to receive the feedback from the folks. We've had a longer phase now when the album was already finished, but not released, so we were all a bit impatient now in the end to get it finally out.
How did you work on the recording of the new album "Omega: Bestia"? Did the restrictions due to the pandemic force you to make some changes in the process?
Not so much for the creation of the album only the fact that we had to postpone the release due to it. For the videos it was more relevant as we had to cope with some lockdown restrictions which did not make it easier and therefore it limited the possibilities to film.
If compared to "Bloodwinter", in "Omega: Bestia" the bombastic elements are almost pushed aside, while there is a more direct and powerful approach. Do you think that your new album is the one with the most heavy metal influenced songwriting?
Well, in my opinion this impression comes due to the fact, that we used less orchestration this time. You are right we wanted to make it sound rougher and heavier compared to "Bloodwinter", with more focus on guitar riffs.
Of course, the epic and pagan side is always present. Do you think that being born in Germany facilitated the construction of these sounds and themes?
Maybe subconsciously. We can find such local influences also in the music of other bands coming from other countries. It's maybe a kind of conditioning which comes from heritage and local music, but there was no real intention to make it sound in that way. In fact, when we started to write the album, we were not really sure how it's going to sound in the end as we had some new members who took part in the songwriting. We just knew it will be a bit different again compared to the past.
In your moniker, as in the artwork of many records, the wolf is a permanent presence. What does this animal represent metaphorically to you?
Freedom, wildness, nature and grace.
You use both English and German for your lyrics. Why did you decide to sing in both languages? How do you choose the most suitable language for a song?
Yes, we frequently get this question. The answer is that on one hand we like both ways and it's simply something like a trademark for us in the meantime. On the other hand it also depends on the song itself. Some lyrics simply fit better in our mother tongue for that particular song. We can express things more emotional and go deep inside the matter.
"Mit Wut und mit Stolz schlage ich ein wie ein Komet": this refrain from an overwhelming song like "Komet" looks like a battle declaration. Against what or who?
The song "Komet" tells more or less a story of a cult who conjures a Comet as they found old prophecies that the Comet will bring fortune and wealth to them. Greed makes them blind and they realize too late that the Comet actually is an intelligent furious entity and finally destroys the earth. The phrase you mention actually says you should not play with uncontrollable forces as you don't know what you provoke.
"Der Geist Und Die Dunkelheit" is certainly the most atmospheric and complex song on the tracklist, with many tempo changes and impressive choral parts. In your opinion, is this the most representative track on the record?
This song is the most representative approach to tell a short story within a song with very epic atmosphere. The intention is to create pictures in the heads of the listeners. Of course this may work better for people who understand German in this case. The story was inspired from the movie "The Ghost And The Darkness" with Val Kilmer and Michel Douglas, but told through the eyes of the two lions.
The songs seem to be linked by a common theme and I think that it is particularly recognizable in "Into Eternal Darkness" and "Out In The Dark". Can you tell us something more about it?
"Into Eternal Darkness" is just a wild ride into the dark describing the madness of the universe where nature's laws get abrogated or inverted. It's beyond our conception and that drives man mad. Darkness as the unknown can also be a shelter. In "Out In The Dark" an oppressed creature flees into the nightly woods from confinement. It feels that its origins lie there and it seeks for freedom and his own kind.
Your previous album "Bloodwinter" was released in 2017 and in the same period your guitarist Eddy Groß sadly passed away. How did you deal with that and how did you manage to come out of this tragic moment and to start all over again? How difficult was it to put together a new record a few years later?
It was a very sad and shocking time for all of us. We decided to go ahead after Eddie passed away as we were already booked on some big festivals that time. Finally in 2018 we needed a break also due to other personal issues. At that time it was not clear if we will go ahead and record a new album. However it turned out to be a healing break and we collected our strength to be back.
Currently the live shows cannot happen, but is there a band you would like to play with in the future? In what place? Maybe Italy?
I wouldn't say there's a particular band but of course we know many friends and bands we would like to meet again. We miss the party and having drinks together after the shows like in the good old times without the virus.
What are your hopes for 2021 and for the future?
Well, let's just come back to normal life doing gigs having fun and celebrate our music. That's all we need.
