Ciao, benvenuti su SpazioRock.it! Sembra che siate molto impegnati in questi giorni... Come sta andando il tour?

Stiamo attraversando un periodo incredibile, allo stesso tempo cresciamo sia come persone che come musicisti.

Ad ottobre avete pubblicato il vostro secondo, e omonimo, album. È stato più semplice o più difficile rispetto al primo? Qual è il stato il miglior feedback che avete ricevuto fino ad ora?

Il nostro primo album, "Soul Insight", comprendeva solo me (Marcus, ndr.) ed il batterista Jack Ryan. Volevamo che questo secondo lavoro fosse una reintroduzione a quella che è la MKB. Tutti i pezzi derivano dall'esperienza reale come per il primo, ma il processo di scrittura si è evoluto, così come la band. Ricevere feedback positivi da persone che stimiamo ci ha motivati a continuare a lavorare per dare il meglio di noi, sempre.

Avete registrato in tour, durante una serie di live session. Quali vantaggi o svantaggi vi ha portato questo tipo di approccio?

L'album è stato registrato a Stamford (CT) in un periodo di tre mesi. Moltissimo del materiale che vi è contenuto è stato scritto on the road. È stato principalmente un vantaggio, per l'ispirazione che ho potuto trovare ogni giorno.

La vostra musica è un amalgama di tanti generi diversi, come jazz, soul, r&b, funky e southern rock. Ciò è il risultato dei diversi contributi e gusti dei membri della band, oppure siete cresciuti assieme nella stessa, eclettica, direzione?

Ciascuno di noi porta un contributo legato alle proprie influenze musicali, ma allo stesso tempo abbiamo diverse preferenze in comune. Jazz, Gospel, Soul, R&B e Rock and Roll. Abbiamo sempre cercato di non ricadere in un unico genere specifico, ma di essere un mix di questi che ho detto. Quando ti esprimi musicalmente è difficile mettere un'etichetta su quello che sei. Il blues più puro è comunque l'elemento musicalmente più consistente in tutti noi.

State tenendo vivo un genere musicale che appartiene ad una lunga e gloriosa tradizione. Qual è il vostro segreto per mantenerlo sempre così fresco e nuovo?

Ci approcciamo ad ogni show con una prospettiva diversa. Il pubblico ci aiuta per lo più a mantenere fresco il repertorio, evitiamo di scrivere una scaletta proprio per poter sprigionare energia vera e genuina dalle persone.

Avete suonato con alcuni ospiti molto speciali in quest'ultimo album, come Derek Trucks e Warren Haynes. Quanto avete imparato da artisti così talentuosi? E cosa?

Sono cresciuto considerando questi artisti come degli eroi. Da questi due musicisti specialmente ho imparato ad avere pazienza e fare le cose nel momento in cui sembra giusto, non nel momento in cui sembra necessario.

Hai detto che la tua musica riflette le tue emozioni e descrive situazioni di vita vera che ti riguardano da vicino. Pensi che ciò semplifichi il processo di scrittura o pensi che sia forse più difficile trovare musiche e parole in grado di descrivere quello che hai dentro?

Jackson Browne una volta disse: "spero che la creatività mi colga mentre lavoro". La mia musica è un filtro nel quale posso liberarmi.

Il 3 di maggio suonerete al Legend Club, a Milano. È la vostra prima volta in Italia, quali sono le aspettative che avete nei confronti del pubblico italiano?

Suonare per la prima volta in un Paese è molto simile ad un primo appuntamento: passeremo i primi 20 minuti circa a conoscerci un po', poi col passare del tempo sarà più facile percepire i nostri reciproci sentimenti.

... e cosa può aspettarsi il pubblico italiano da voi? Quali sono i vostri punti di forza sul palco?

Dal vivo siamo come un treno merci, una scarica di energia. Frustrazione accumulata, ansia, rabbia, depressione e felicità sono le emozioni che vogliamo far sputare fuori al pubblico assieme alle nostre. Alla fine della serata voglio che ci ritroviamo tutti a fare un bel respiro assieme.

È la vostra prima visita in assoluto nel nostro Paese? Pensate che questo viaggio possa ispirare nuova musica? Credo che i vostri fan italiani ne sarebbero onorati!

Sono quasi sicuro che la mia prima volta in Italia mi ispirerà molto. Sono molto onorato di poterla visitare.

Hi and welcome to SpazioRock.it! According to your schedule, you guys are pretty busy in these days... How's the tour going?

We're having an incredible time. Growing as people and as musicians together.

In October you released your second and self-titled album. Was it tougher or easier than writing your debut album? What is the most satisfying feedback you have received so far?

Our first album "Soul Insight" only included myself and drummer Jack Ryan. We wanted this album to be a re-introduction to what MKB is. The songs all came from a very real place just as the first record but the writing had evolved just as the band had. Receiving positive feedback from people we admire has motivated to keep working to be the best we can be, always.

You recorded the album on the road, during a series of live sessions. What kind of advantages or challenges did you find in this kind of approach?

The album was recorded in Stamford (CT) over a period of three months. A lot of the material was written while on the road. An advantage of that writing approach was the inspiration I found every day.

Your music is a mix of a lot of different genres like jazz, soul, r&b, funky and southern rock. Is this the results of different contributions and interests of each member or you just grew up, as a band, in the same but eclectic direction?

Everyone in the band brings a different upbringing of influences while at the same time we have similar influences on common. Jazz, Gospel, Soul, R&B Rock and Roll. We've never wanted to be categorized as one specific genre but an amalgam of all of these. When expressing yourself musically it's hard to put a title in what it is you are. Blues at its core is the most consistent factor with all of us musically as far as influence.

You are somehow keeping alive a musical genre that belongs to a great and very long-lasting tradition. What's your secret to keep it fresh and new?

We approach every night with a different outlook. The audience helps mostly in keeping the set fresh. We avoid writing setlists to have a true musical release of the energy in the room.

You played with some very special guests in this last album, like Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. How much, and what, have you learnt from such talented artists?

I grew up with these artists as my heroes. Especially from these two musicians, I learned about patience and playing where it feels right, not because it feels necessary.

You said your music reflects your emotions and describes real life situations that affect you. Do you think it makes the compositional process easier for you or is it somehow harder to find the right music and words to open yourself up?

Jackson Browne said it best when he said: "I hope creativity finds me working". My music is a filter in which I can release.

On the 3rd of May you will be playing at the Legend Club in Milan. This is your first time in Italy as a band so... What are your expectations about Italian audience?

Playing a region for the first time is a lot like a first date. We'll spend the first 20 minutes or so getting to know each other, As the night goes on we'll become more receptive to each other's love!

And what can your Italian audience can expect from you? What are you key strengths on stage?

Our live show is like a freight train. A release of energy. Pinned up frustration, anxiety, anger, depression and happiness. We want the audience to be able to release these emotions with us simultaneously. At the end of the night I want us all to take a breath together.

Is this your first visit to Italy ever? Do you think this trip may inspire you at least a new song? I am sure your Italian fans would be delighted!

I am almost certain my first time in Italy will inspire music. I'm very honored to be visiting.
