Avete finalmente annunciato l'uscita internazionale del vostro quarto album, "Zero Hour", disponibile dal 22 settembre. Qual è la parte più "spaventosa" dell'uscire con un nuovo disco?

É un po' come quando lavori duramente a qualcosa, cercando di ottenere il miglior suono possibile, e poi lo offri al mondo e ti prepari all'idea che potrebbe non piacere a tutti... è un po' un paragone assurdo ma è come quando ti nasce un figlio e speri che dopo averlo mostrato alla gente nessuno se ne vada in giro a dire "è un bambino bruttissimo!" Abbiamo davvero lavorato sodo sul sound e sui contenuti, più di quanto fatto per qualsiasi altro album del passato.

Siete sempre stati molto produttivi, pubblicando 3 album in cinque anni. Cosa possiamo aspettarci di trovare nel nuovo "Zero Hour" e come mai avete scelto proprio questo titolo?

"Zero Hour" è la versione 2.0 dei Diablo Boulevard. Nei primi tre album avevamo sempre la stessa formazione, mentre ora il nostro chitarrista principale ha lasciato la band e il nostro bassista ha preso il suo posto - anche perchè quello è sempre stato il suo mestiere. Il nuovo bassista Rammeloo Jan suonava già in un'altra band belga che conosciamo, quindi è un vecchio amico e siamo molto felici di averlo a bordo anche se questo ha cambiato inevitabilmente molto le dinamiche della band. Dave aveva questo sound iper riconoscibile molto rock, mentre Tim ha un suono molto diverso che si addice moltissimo alla nuova musica che abbiamo scritto essendo pieno di influenze anni '80, che poi è la musica con la quale sono cresciuto. Se ci pensi anche il periodo storico in cui stiamo vivendo è pieno di parallelismi con gli anni '80. Abbiamo di nuovo un primo ministro donna in Inghilterra, un pagliaccio alla Casa Bianca che nessuno prende sul serio come accadde per Ronald Reagan che poi finì per diventare un presidente molto influente... Trump ha corso per la Casa Bianca con lo stesso slogan, lo sapevi? "Make America great again". Abbiamo queste super potenze, parliamo di costruire nuovi muri, come se volessimo tornare indietro nel tempo e ricreare la grandezza del passato... è spaventoso, ed è su questo che abbiamo riflettuto in ogni pezzo di questo nuovo album. La chitarra di Tim è più meccanica e si sposa benissimo con questo stile, e penso che abbiamo finalmente trovato lo stile che stavamo cercando.

Se dovessi parlare di voi a qualcuno che non conosce i Diablo Boulevard quale album mi suggeriresti di fargli sentire per primo?

Aaaah bella domanda! Direi l'ultimo, perchè è esattamente dove ci troviamo adesso. Abbiamo sempre scritto le canzoni badando poco all'immagine, scriviamo canzoni perchè è ciò che amiamo, proprio come amavano fare le mie band preferite. Se prendi band come "The Cult" o "Nine Inch Nails", "Metallica", scrivevano canzoni che potevi ricordare. Io non ho una voce "heavy", sono un cantante a cui piace sperimentare con le melodie, cercando di scrivere cose che la gente ricorderà. Consiglierei anche di ascoltare "Follow The Dead Lights" dell'album precedente o "Saint Of Killers", il cui video è il nostro video più visto di sempre su YouTube.

So che la vostra ispirazione viene dalle band metal più classiche come i Type O'Negative, Black Sabbath, Metallica ma anche da band più recenti. Quale pensi sia stata o sia attualmente la vostra influenza sulle band che verranno?

Penso che il nostro messaggio e il nostro intento sia quello di suonare come nessun altro, che è una delle cose più importanti per una band. Non siamo mai stati una band tipica di una particolare scena, abbiamo sempre fatto a modo nostro. La ragione per cui ho deciso di metter su una band alla fine è che sentivo la mancanza di un particolare tipo di musica e così l'ho suonata io. Ormai suoniamo insieme da dodici anni e ogni passo che facciamo ci avvicina al tipo di sound che ci rende unici. Spesso nelle interviste ci viene detto "non somigliate a nessuno" e credo sia il complimento più bello che un artista possa ricevere, non essere paragonato a nessuno.

Parlando di cose nuove, nel 2014 avete organizzato il vostro festival metal, il "Diablo Fest" a Trix, Antwerp, per promuovere "Follow The Dead Lights" e allo stesso tempo avete dato a molte giovani band sconosciute del Benelux una grande opportunità di farsi sentire.

Sempre tornando al dicorso di noi che facciamo le nostre cose a modo nostro... volevamo fare il nostro festival, volevamo che alcune band che avevamo scoperto avessero il pubblico che meritavano e così li abbiamo aiutati con un'occasione. Lo abbiamo già organizzato per un paio di anni e lo faremo di nuovo il prossimo anno. E' anche una cosa molto bella per la scena metal il fatto che io in Belgio sia molto famoso come comico e che moltissima gente mi segua perchè in questo modo otteniamo un sacco di promozione, passaggi in radio, e usiamo quel tipo di attenzione per aiutare anche le altre band emergenti. Per il Festival abbiamo anche deciso di tenere bassi i prezzi dei biglietti perchè se c'è una cosa che odio sono i biglietti che costano un occhio e che impediscono ai ragazzini di andare a sentire le loro band preferite perchè non se lo possono permettere. Noi abbiamo calmierato i prezzi vendendoli per solo 18€ a biglietto; per questa cifra potevi goderti 5 bands, farti un panino e vedere gli stand. E' stato come un vecchio punk hardcore show... sai noi proveniamo tutti dalla scena underground e questa parte autentica è quella che ci manca di più, oggi che sembra tutto diventato solo un gigantesco business.

La prossima domanda ha a che fare con la copertina del nuovo album, disegnata da Hedi Xandt. Come avete scelto questo design?

Hedi è un artista Norvegese. In passato il nostro batterista Chris si è sempre occupato dei nostri artwork lavorando in combo con un suo amico esperto in 3D ma stavolta cercavamo qualcosa di diverso, qualcosa che seguisse l'onda dei recenti cambiamenti che ci sono stati nel sound, nella line up, abbiamo addirittura cambiato logo, usato differenti font. Volevamo una copertina che attraesse la gente senza spingerla in una particolare direzione. Le copertine precedenti sembravano dire chiaramente "hey, siamo una band metal!" ora siamo più orientati verso questo concetto di contrasto tra la bellezza e l'oscurità. Il nostro batterista ha trovato online un disegno di questo artista che l'ha colpito moltissimo, quindi abbiamo contattato Hedi, che prima ha voluto ascoltare la nostra musica per farsi un'idea. Ha apprezzato moltissimo il nostro stile, e ci ha detto che il disegno che ci era piaciuto tanto era stato ispirato da Marylin Manson.. io adoro Marylin Manson. Alla fine ci ha dato il permesso di usarlo.

Dando uno sguardo alla tracklist del nuovo album mi sono chiesta se aveste scelto di proposito di far uscire l'album a fine settembre quando l'ultima traccia si intitola "Summer Has Gone"?

E' stata una fortunatissima coincidenza. Stavamo pensando a quale singolo far uscire, e questo pezzo che è l'ultimo dell'album, è come se fosse una canzone d'addio, che contiene elmenti sia aggressivi sia malinconici ed è molto interessante, non proprio il tipico pezzo da singolo. Fondamentalmente è il modo in cui ci sentiamo adesso, un po' alla motto di Game of Thrones "Winter is coming", come se un grande cambiamento stesse per travolgerci tutti nei prossimi anni. Ci troviamo in un momento storico in cui sembra che il mondo stia per finire proprio come è successo altre volte in passato con la caduta dell'Impero Romano e l'avvento del Cristianesimo. Mi fa pensare a questa nuova ondata di terrore, alla gente che si sente spaventata dalle culture diverse dalla propria... il mondo non è poi cambiato molto. La mia paura non è tanto quella che il mondo finisca, ma penso che siamo in procinto di fare una rivoluzione nel senso più letterale del termine, con qualcosa che compie un giro su sè stesso e si ripete chiudendo un ciclo. Penso sia un'epoca molto interessante nella quale vivere nonostante la costante paura degli attacchi terroristici e le scelte discutibili che la gente sta facendo nell'eleggere i propri leader. Ma alla fine è di questo che parla "Zero Hour".

Avete appena finito una serie di date con i Life Of Agony che sono andate molto bene in Europa, ma nelle prossime date del vostro tour non vedo l'Italia!

E' vero...abbiamo suonato a Milano con i Machine Head, e sicuramente vogliamo tornarci presto ma è solo questione di tempo, perchè abbiamo intenzione di tornare in tutto il sud dell'Europa quanto prima!

You have finally announced the international release of your fourth album "Zero Hour" which will be out September 22nd. What's the scariest part of releasing a new album?

It's just that you've worked really hard on something, trying to make it sound as good as you can  and then of course when you release it you prepare yourself for not anybody might like it. I know it's just a weird comparison but it's like when you show the world your new child and you don't want them to say "hey, that's a really ugly kid!". We worked really hard on that sound and on the lyrical content, more than in any other album we've ever made.

You've always been very productive, releasing 3 albums in 5 years. What can we expect to find in the new one, and why did you choose the title "Zero Hour"?

"Zero Hour" is the 2.0 version of Diablo Boulevard. The first three albums we made had the same line up, and now our lead guitar Dave isn't part of the band anymore, our bass player Tim switched to lead guitar cause that's what he actually is, we have a new bass player called Rammeloo Jan who used to play in a Belgian band so it's like an old friend and we're really glad to get him on board but it kind of changed the entire dynamic in the band. Dave had this very distinctive rocknrollish sound and Tim has a totally different guitar sound which fits the way our new music sounds a lot better cause it's a lot colder with '80s influences which is basically the music I grew up with. There are tons of parallels with that time in the '80s nowadays. We have a female prime minister in England again, a clown in the White House nobody takes seriously, same as Ronald Reagan who turned out to be a very influential president, and Trump actually ran on the same slogan for President using "Let's make America great again", we have these super powers, we talk about building walls, like we're trying to turn back the clock and go back to the greatness of the past and it's kind of scary and that to my was a very important theme on the new record. Tim's guitar style is more machine's like and it fits the style a lot more, and I think we've finally found the sound we've always been looking for.

If I were to talk about you to a person who has never heard of Diablo Boulevard which album would you suggest to listen to first?

Aaaah that's a really good question! I would say make him listen to the new album cause that's where we are now. We've always written songs, we've never been about image, we like to write songs, like my favorite bands used to do, if you think about "The Cult" or "Nine Inch Nails", "Metallica", they wrote songs that you can remember. I don't have a heavy voice, I am a guy who sings songs, I like to experiment with the melody, trying to write something that people will remember. I would also say, listen to the song "Follow The Dead Lights" on the previous album or "Saint Of Killers", that song is our more watched video on YouTube.

I know your inspiration comes from both classic metal like Type O'Negative, Black Sabbath, Metallica and more recent things. What do you think is your own influence on the next bands of your scene?

I think our input is not sounding like anybody else, which is one of the most important things you can do as a band. We've never been kind of a "scene band", we've always been about making our own way. We basically started the band because I wasn't hearing the kind of music I wanted to hear. We've been together for twelve years and every step we take gets us closer to that kind of sound that makes you unique. That's what I've been hearing in almost every interview "you don't sound like anybody else" and that's the best compliment you can get, not been compared to anybody else.

Talking about doing something new, in 2014 you organized your own festival, the "Diablo Fest" in Trix, Antwerp, in order to promote "Follow The Dead Lights" and at the same time to give a huge opportunity to new bands in the Benelux metal scene by making them play on your stage.

Talking about us doing our own thing, we wanted to do our own festival, we wanted the bands we like to be heard by people, help them to be seen. A lot of those bands are friends of ours or bands we've toured with. It was a really cool thing to do, we did that twice and we're gonna do that again next year. It's also cool for the metal scene, cause in Belgium I'm a very famous stand up comedian so there's a lot of people who know me, and because of that we get a lot of promotion, radio stations playing our songs... so we use that kind of attention to also help other bands to emerge. For the festival we also decided to keep the tickets really cheap, I hate when the tickets for the festivals are so expensive cause a lot of young kinds can't even afford to go and see their favorite bands because of it. We kept the tickets at a very cheap price, just 18€ and people could enjoy five bands, a food truck , merchandise... it was like an old fashioned punk hardcore show. We all come from the underground scene and that's the part we're all missing the most, now it seems it's all become a huge business.

Next question is about the album cover which was designed by Hedi Xandt. How did you come up with the design?

Hedi is a Norwegian artist. In the past our drummer Chris has always designed our artworks working with a good friend of his who is a 3D model artist but this time we were looking for something different, there's been a lot changing lately, from the sound, the line up, we even changed our logo, we've been using a different font for our letters. We wanted a cover which would attract people without pushing them in any particular direction. Our previous covers clearly said "we're a metal band", now we're more into this new concept of contrast between beauty and darkness. Our drummer found this particular picture by Hedi which became the cover, so we contacted him, but he wanted to listen to our music first to get the idea and he really loved it! He told us that the artwork we chose was inspired by Marylin Manson and I really love Marylin Manson, so he gave us permission to use it.

Taking a closer look to the track list of the album, was it a choice you made on purpose to release the album at the end of summer cause the last track of the album (and released single) is titled "Summer Has Gone"?

That's kind of a happy coincidence. We were thinking about which single to release, and this song is the last on the album and kind of a farewell song which includes both aggressive and sad feelings and musically it's very interesting. It's not a typical single but I don't think this album has any kind of that "typical single" song. It's just basically the thing we're feeling right now, this kinda "Game Of Thrones - feeling" when they go "winter is coming", like there's gonna be a mayor change in the next few years. We find ourselves in that kind of historical moment when it looks like the world is coming to an end just like it has happened in the past with the fall of the Roman Empire and the rising of the new religion. It makes me think about this new wave of terror, the people feeling threatened by other cultures and the world hasn't changed that much. I'm not really scared that the world will come to an end, but I feel like there's gonna be a revolution in the literal sense of the word, with something that turns around and repeats itself doing a full circle. This is a very interesting time to live in though it's scary with terrorist attacks and people choosing weird leaders, making weird decisions, and that's basically what the entire album is about.

You just finished the tour with Life of Agony, and it went really good but I can't see Italy in the upcoming tour dates!

We' ve played Milan with Machine Head, and we want to come back soon, but it's just really a matter of time, we definitely wanna come back in the southern part of Europe soon.
