Il music business non è mai stato un ambiente facile, e l'avvento di internet ha cambiato le regole del gioco per tutti nella musica. La situazione è molto migliorata grazie ad iTunes, ma oggi come oggi qualsiasi cosa viene proposta con una sottoscrizione mensile, e grazie al cielo possiamo sempre suonare dal vivo e mantenere vivi i nostri sogni!

Sei anni fa usciva "Rockaholic", l'album che vi ha rilanciati, e oggi siete tornati con "Louder Harder Faster". Che è successo durante questa pausa?

Abbiamo suonato circa 50 show all'anno! Andare in tour in America è una cosa che ci dà molte soddisfazioni. Siamo piuttosto lenti nel processo di scrittura, ma quando ci arriviamo sforniamo qualcosa di veramente buono, mia umile opinione. Resta il fatto che sono sempre i fans a decretarne il successo.

Alcune delle vostre top ten hits come "I Saw Red" e "Cherry Pie" passarono in heavy rotation su MTV per diverso tempo. Come decidevate lo storyboard dei vostri video? Contribuivate anche voi della band a scriverli? E qual è il tuo preferito di sempre?

Per il nostro primo video "Down Boys" l'etichetta non ci lasciò decidere un bel niente; assunsero questo regista che ci diceva come e quando presentarci in scena. Facemmo del nostro meglio e tutto sommato andò molto bene. Vendemmo 500 mila copie solo di quella canzone! Una volta riscosso tutto quel successo, l'etichetta cominciò a lasciarci scegliere i registi e contribuire alle story lines. Il video di "Cherry Pie" rimane davvero difficile da battere (ride, ndr.). Devo ammettere che sono molto affezionato a tutti i nostri video, mi ricordano moltissimi episodi della mia vita a quei tempi.

Quanto pensi che un pezzo come "Cherry Pie" abbia offuscato alcune delle vostre produzioni più impegnate come "Blind Faith" e "I Saw Red"?

Dal mio punto di vista, ovvero da quello di qualcuno che può ancora starsene sul palco, direi che la cosa non mi ha impensierito. I fans degli Warrant adorano le ballad così come i pezzi più spinti e in entrambi i casi abbiamo raggiunto la top ten delle classifiche. A questo proposto consiglio di ascoltare "U in my life" dal nuovo album se avete voglia di una bellissima canzone d'amore e "Big Sandy" se invece siete più affamati del classico stile Warrant da grandi inni rock.

La morte di Jani Lane (trovato morto al Los Angeles Comfort Inn all'età di 47 anni, ndr.) significò per tutti la fine di un' era, ma voi avete tenuto duro e avete tenuto in vita la vostra musica. Forse le persone che hanno visto accadere una simile tragedia dal di fuori non hanno un'idea precisa di che tipo di persona fosse Jani. Ti va di raccontarci il più bel ricordo legato a lui che conservi nel cuore?

Le prime parole che mi vengono in mente sono complicato, talentuoso, divertente, autodistruttivo... con un dono unico per il songwriting, un cantante un frontman eccezionale... prima che l'alcool cominciasse a distruggerlo dentro e fuori. Abbiamo avuto molti alti e bassi, mi manca il Jani con cui condividevo la stanza e il mio migliore amico prima che le cose andassero male.

Alla notiizia della vostra reunion i fans furono felicissimi. Ci sono molte band là fuori che i fans sperano di rivedere un giorno insieme su un palco o che magari continuano a suonare ma solo con alcuni dei membri originali. C'è una band che tu adoreresti rivedere unita? 

You have eight million records sold worldwide, two Top Ten Billboard albums, five Top 40 Billboard hits, five #1 MTV videos... This is definitely something that young bands trying to make it nowadays can't even dream of. Why do you think is so difficult to break through in 2017?

We play 50 shows a year every year, business for touring is very good in America for us. We are slow to write new material, but when we do its pretty good in my humble opinion... but ultimately that's for the fans to decide.

Some of yours top ten hits like "I Saw Red" and the rock anthem "Cherry Pie", received massive airplay on MTV. How did you decide the storyboard of your videos? Was it something the band contributed to write? And which one is your favorite so far?

For our first video "Down Boys" the record label didn't let us share any of our ideas. They hired a director and told us where and when to show up. We made the best of it and it did really well for us. We sold 500k records off that song alone. Once we had success the label let us pick our own directors and contribute to the story lines. Well, the "Cherry Pie" video is hard to beat, ha! I dig most of our videos, they remind me and bring memories of that time in my life.

How much do you think "Cherry Pie" has overshadowed some of your deeper songwriting like "Blind Faith" and "I Saw Red"?

In 2001 you released "Under The Influence" which was a collection of covers such as "Toys In The Attic" (Aerosmith), Tie your mother down" (Queen), "Come And Get It" (Paul McCartney)... if you could choose a new band's song that you really think has the potential for success nowadays, which song would you cover?

The death of Jani Lane (who was found dead in a Los Angeles Comfort Inn at 47, Ed.) meant the end of an era, but you stayed strong and kept your music alive. Maybe people who saw it from an external point of view have no really idea of what kind of person he was. Would you like to tell us the best memory related to him you still keep safe in your heart?

You got back together and fans loved it. There are many bands out there that aren't doing the reunions people would like to see, or playing with some of the original members only. Is there a band you really wish would re-establish itself?
