Mezzogiorno - Piazza del Popolo. Ancora a 15km di distanza dall'Ippodromo Capannelle, si può già riconoscere l'orda di magliette nere a cingere in assedio a questo luogo storico - normalmente ben lungi dall'essere un quartier generale di metallari. Il che rende il tutto ben più facile se sei un umile servitore francese che aspira unicamente a ricongiungersi con la fratellanza che già presidia Via Appia Nuova. Due ore dopo, traghettati da un autobus dove ci saranno stati almeno 40°, finalmente arriviamo.
WILD LIES
Superato un controllo di sicurezza non particolarmente approfondito, facciamo giusto in tempo a raggiungere il palco principale per assistere agli ultimi minuti dei Wild Lies. Questo quintetto rock londinese è la band perfetta per lanciare un festival in un pomeriggio di sole. La folla reagisce entusiasta al loro sound coinvolgente e alla loro performance energica. Consigliati ai fan degli Aerosmith! La scaletta comprende sia canzoni del loro EP di debutto che tracce inedite che verranno incluse nel loro primo album di prossima uscita. Molto promettenti!

Dopo questa esibizione ci siamo diretti all'area vip dove la band ci ha raggiunto per un'intervista. Mentre i musicisti si concedevano le loro docce (meritate quanto necessarie), c'è stato tempo a sufficienza per osservare chi andava e veniva. Nella sua tenuta molto casual, Joey Belladonna degli Anthrax sembrava così rilassato che siamo andati molto vicini a invitarlo a giocare a basket con noi. Beh, se avessimo avuto un pallone, lo avremmo fatto davvero. Ma sfortunatamente il canestro è rimasto tutto solo e inutilizzato a mo' di decorazione. Nessun rimpianto, l'addetto stampa non sarebbe stato granché entusiasta della trovata, magari conscio che avremmo potuto turbare la quiete (e aveva ragione).
SABATON
Terminata l'intervista ai Wild Lies, e citata ogni possibile ipotesi di complotto riguardo a Bon Scott con Zak Müller, è tempo di tornare di fronte al palco per i nostri pagani svedesi preferiti: i Sabaton. Il festival non è sold out e ciò permette a chiunque di muoversi molto facilmente diversamente da festival affollatissimi come l'Hellfest. Metereologicalmente parlando, non potrebbe andare meglio: sole costante e pioggia rinfrescante. Tornando ai Sabaton, sembra che migliorino tour dopo tour. A tutt'oggi hanno un buona quota di classici tra cui la loro epica canzone di apertura "Ghost Division" o l'esuberante "Primo Victoria". Come da tradizione, i membri della band interagiscono molto e si lanciano in battute decisamente apprezzate. Della loro vena umoristica ricordiamo soltanto la loro versione di "Wind Of Change". Inoltre si segnala come questa sia stata la prima esibizione del festival dove la folla ha iniziato a saltare con entusiasmo. Prima di lasciare il palco, il carismatico frontman Joakim Brodén ne approfitta per annunciare al pubblico che la band sarà di ritorno nel 2017 con una band di supporto nota ai più come... Accept. A volte l'allievo supera il maestro.

L'Italia è stata decisamente fortunata a ospitare i Metallica in svariate delle edizioni precedenti del Sonisphere. Quest'anno figura invece un altro membro dei Big Four sul menù: gli Anthrax. Diversamente dai suoi compagni di band, Joey Belladonna sembra esattamente lo stesso del video di "Madhouse". Lui e Scott Ian riescono ancora a godersi il momento come se fossero una band del liceo al loro primo concerto. Un fervore che, combinato con l'esperienza e la maestria di 35 anni di carriera, viene espresso al meglio in "Caught In A Mosh" e "Antisocial" le quali saranno state suonate entrambe per almeno la millesima (?!) volta. Dando un'occhiata agli stand del merchandising, è pressoché impossibile trovare qualcosa che non sia una maglietta degli Iron Maiden o dei Saxon. Siamo un po' rattristati per i Wild Lies dato che, secondo il chitarrista Zak, avrebbero dovuto avere articoli esposti. La folla frattanto incita l'entrata dei Saxon. I veterani britannici vengono quindi accolti da un caloroso benvenuto. Il cantante Biff Byford fa credere al pubblico che la band si sia lanciata in una serie di improvvisazioni offrendo una setlist a brandelli e chiedendo agli astanti che volessero ascoltare. In realtà si trattava di un'interazione studiata a tavolino per riscaldare il pubblico ancora di più: alla fine infatti I Saxon hanno poi suonato come da copione. Si è trattata di una setlist ridotta all'imprescindibile come "Heavy Metal Thunder" e "Crusader". Gli spettatori più giocani non conoscevano necessariamente le canzoni ma scapellavano ugualmente. Di certo una prova di valore. Chi potrebbe mai venire deluso dai Saxon? L'unica nota dolente potrebbe essere stata l'assenza di "Broken Heroes" e "I've Got To Rock".

La notte sta calando e siamo sorpresi di non avere visto nemmeno un travestimento nel pubblico. Beh, c'era qualcuno fuori dall'ippodormo in effetti: un templare. Sarà stato per il caldo? A pensarci, un festival come l'Hellfest sembra una festa in maschera: abbiamo perso il conto di Gesù, Papi, Power Rangers, supereroi, vichinghi, ecc. Nonostante l'assenza di stravaganza, gli spettatori sono comunque stati reattivi tutto il giorno.
E mentre degli arei sorvolano l'ippodromo, i roadies preparano il poderoso palco per i tanto attesi headliners: gli Iron Maiden. Possiamo notare un rinnovamento della scenografia, leggermente diversa da quella di inizio tour. Con sei canzoni dal nuovo album "The Book Of Souls", capitolo glorioso nella storia dalla band, i Maiden sono ben lungi dall'offrire una scaletta nostalgica. Tutto quello che possiamo fare è dunque inchinarci di fronte all'impressionante performance di Bruce Dickinson. Difficile credere che sia lo stesso uomo che, non troppo tempo fa, ha dovuto affrontare un cancro. Nessuno dei suoi innumerevoli, e tradizionali, "scream for me" è caduto inascoltato. Così come il suo discorso sulla tolleranza in antifona a "Blood Brothers" e le parole spese in tributo a Robin Williams a introdurre "Tears Of A Clown". E' bello poter vivere nella stessa epoca di Bruce.

Midday - Piazza del Popolo. At 15km from the Ippodromo delle Capannelle, we can already spot a horde of black T-shirts around the historical place - normally far from being a metalhead headquarters. Which makes things very easy for your french humble servant who just need to follow the brotherhood to reach Via Appia Nuova. 2h later in an almost 40° degrees bus, we finaly arrive.
WILD LIES
Just in time to cross the very light security check and reach the front stage to see the last minutes of Wild Lies. This London-based rock quintet is the perfect band to launch a sunny festival on the afternoon. The crowd reacts enthusiastically to their catchy sound and the powerful performance. For fans of Aerosmith! The setlist consisted of songs from their debut EP and also unrealeased tracks that will feature on their upcoming full album. Very promising!
After the performance, we're heading towards the vip area where the band will join us for an interview. While the musicians are taking their (deserved and necessary) shower, there are plenty of time to observe coming and going. In his very casual outfit, Joey Belladonna of Anthrax seemed so relax that we were very close to invite him to play basketball. Well, if we had found a ball, we would have. But unfortunately, the basketball hoop was standing all alone as a decoration. No regrets, the press officier wasn't fond of the idea anyway, perhaps mindful not to disturb the peace (he was right).
SABATON
Once the interview with Wild Lies was done, and every Bon Scott related conspiracy theories shelled with our friend Zak Müller, time to go back in front of the stage for our favorite Swedish Pagans: Sabaton. The festival isn't sold out, which allows everyone to move along very easily, unlike overcrowded festivals like Hellfest. Meteorologically speaking, it couldn't be more perfect with this constant sun and some refreshing rain. Seems like Sabaton is growing tour after tour. They now have a good amount of classics such as their epic starting song "Ghost Division" or the exuberant "Primo Victoria". Like usual, the band members interact a lot and make some appreciated silly jokes. We will also remember the humoristic version of "Wind Of Change". First concert of the festival where the crowd start to intensely jump. Before leaving the stage, charismatic Joakim Brodén takes time to announce to the audience the band will be back in 2017 with a support band named... Accept. At times, the student surpasses the teacher.
ANTHRAX
Italy was lucky enough to host Metallica several times in previous editions of the Sonisphere. This year, another member of the Big Four features on the menu: Anthrax. Unlike his bandmates, Joey Belladonna looks just the way he did back in the "Madhouse" video. He and Scott Ian are enjoying the moment just like a high school band during their first gig. A fervor combined with the experience and mastery of a 35 years career, best illustrated by "Caught In A Mosh" and "Antisocial" that have been played nearly 1000 times (?!) already. SAXON
Looking at merchandising stands, it's almost impossible to find something else than Iron Maiden or Saxon shirt. We feel sad for Wild Lies who according to Zak was supposed to have items displayed. The crowd loudly acclaim Saxon before their entry, and a very warm welcome is delivered to the british veterans. Biff Byford makes the audience believe the band is improvising by turning up a setlist in pieces and asking them what they want to hear. A staged interaction to warm the audience even more: in the end, Saxon played their set just as it was planned. A set made of the essentials "Heavy Metal Thunder" or "Crusader". Younger spectators didn't necessary knew the songs but they were headbanging anyway. A sure value. Who ever got disappointed by Saxon? The only disappointment could have been the absence of "Broken Heroes" and "I've Got To Rock".
IRON MAIDEN
The night is falling and we're surprised not having seen any costume in the audience. Or let's say one just outside the venue (a templar). Maybe because of the heat? As compared, festivals like Hellfest looks like costume parties: we lost count of Jesus, Papa Emeritus, Power Rangers, superheroes, Vikings, etc. Nevertheless, despite of his lack of extravagance, the crowd has been reactive all-day long.
And while some planes are flying over the Ippodromo delle Capannelle, roadies are setting up the mighty stage of the highly anticipated headline: Iron Maiden. We can notice a renewal of the stage graphics, a little different from the beginning of the tour. With six songs from the new album "The Book Of Souls", a glorious chapter in the band's history, Maiden is far from delivering a "nostalgia" set. All we can do is kneeling down in front of Bruce Dickinson's impressing performance. Hard to believe that same man was facing a cancer not so long ago. None of his countless "scream for me", one of his trademarks, went unnoticed. As well as his speech of tolerance before "Blood Brothers" and the tribute words for Robin Williams in introduction of "Tears Of A Clown". Glad to be living in the same time period.
