Ciao e benvenuti su SpazioRock! Iniziamo subito parlando di voi, dei Follow The Cipher: siete appena entrati nella scena musicale e sembra che siate pronti a farvi valere con il vostro album di debutto. Come descrivereste il cammino che vi ha portati da qualcosa che è nato come progetto solista a questo primo grande traguardo?

Come hai scritto, all'inizio si trattava di un progetto solista di Ken, in cui aveva poi reclutato Linda. Dopo un po' di tempo, entrambi si sono resi conto che sarebbe stato più divertente avere una vera e propria band. Così Ken ha chiesto a tre persone se volessero entrare nel progetto, si trattava di Björn, Jocke e Daniel dei Twilight Force. Questa cosa però non è durata molto perché la loro band principale prendeva troppo tempo, per cui hanno deciso di comune accordo di separarsi, ma sono tuttora ottimi amici. La ricerca di nuovi membri per la band è così ricominciata e Ken ha chiesto a Viko se voleva unirsi ai Follow The Cipher. I due avevano già lavorato insieme quando Viko militava nei Mashima e Ken aveva mixato il loro album. Ken voleva Viko come chitarrista ma anche come autore delle canzoni e per fortuna lui ha accettato. A quel punto servivano bassista e batterista. Sempre a Ken è venuta l'idea di coinvolgere Jonas, con cui era in contatto già da tempo, e lui ha accettato a condizione di poter portare anche me come batterista. Tutti hanno accettato ed è così che nel gennaio 2015 i Follow The Cipher sono diventati ciò che vedete adesso.

Il vostro disco di debutto, omonimo, è uscito da pochissimo: quali sono le migliori e le peggiori emozioni legate a questo evento?

La migliore sicuramente quando abbiamo suonato al Metalfest, qualche settimana fa; abbiamo fatto una signing session e la risposta è stata incredibile, non pensavamo che venisse così tanta gente per noi. La peggiore invece riguarda i live show, non ne abbiamo fatti molti e stiamo già suonando in festival con un grande pubblico, ce la mettiamo tutta ma a volte non ci sentiamo all'altezza. Comunque ci stiamo lavorando e ci sentiamo sempre più sicuri e rilassati durante i live, stiamo facendo del nostro meglio.

Se dovessi rivolgerti a una persona che non vi conosce, quali sono le canzoni dal vostro album che consiglieresti come primo approccio alla vostra musica?

Sceglierei tre canzoni: "Valkyria", "Winterfall" e "Play With Fire". La prima è stata scritta da Ken e Viko insieme e contiene tutti gli elementi chiave del nostro sound, Valkyria è sicuramente il primo brano che consiglierei. Anche "Winterfall" è perfetta per conoscere il nostro lavoro perché è una delle prime tracce scritte da Ken. Ultima ma non meno importante "Play With Fire", scritta da Viko e ultima canzone preparata prima di cominciare le registrazioni del disco, attualmente è la mia preferita.

Anch'io avrei detto "Winterfall" e aggiungo "The Rising". Sono canzoni potenti, che possono essere considerate un manifesto del vostro sound e dimostrano alla perfezione ciò di cui siete capaci. Sei d'accordo?

Be', entrambi abbiamo detto "Winterfall" quindi direi che siamo d'accordo al 100%. Credo che anche "The Rising" sia una bellissima canzone e sono sicuro che altri della band l'avrebbero scelta come loro preferita!

"Follow The Cipher" è sicuramente un album che racchiude elementi da diversi generi musicali. Quali sono stati i vostri obiettivi durante la scrittura del disco? E quali sono i vostri generi di riferimento?

Purtroppo io non sono stato direttamente coinvolto nel processo di scrittura quindi mi è difficile rispondere a questa domanda, ma penso comunque che il nostro obiettivo sia chiaramente scrivere canzoni che spaccano con un suono moderno e possente. Da quanto ho sentito da Ken e Viko, non avevano una fonte di ispirazione precisa ma hanno gusti musicali comuni quindi è possibile che questi li abbiano ispirati inconsciamente. Gli In Flames, per esempio, sono un gruppo che piace molto a Ken e la cui influenza l'ha portato a scrivere musica più heavy. Un altro artista che so che ama molto è Hans Zimmer, mentre il preferito di Viko è Davin Townsend.

Il suono dell'album è molto potente e variegato. Parliamo un po' di produzione e dacci qualche dettaglio in più su come avete lavorato durante le registrazioni per ottenere questo risultato e in particolare su come avete bilanciato i vostri ruoli. Avete dei ricordi legati al periodo di registrazione?

Sono contento che il suono ti piaccia. Sono tre le persone che hanno lavorato al suono di questo disco, al processo di mixaggio e di masterizzazione, per diverse ragioni. Ken si è occupato di mixare e masterizzare il brano "Winterfall" e infatti abbiamo dovuto registrarlo nuovamente per il disco, ma alla fine abbiamo visto che la nuova versione non raggiungeva i livelli di quella vecchia per cui abbiamo incluso la versione di Ken alla fine. Buster Douglas Odeholm si è occupato di "The Rising", "Carolus Rex" e "Valkyria" e infine Alexander Backe Backlund ha mixato tutto il resto. La qualità del suono viene da una combinazione di vari elementi ma anche qui sono stati Ken e Viko a fare da "mixing-masters", sono stati molto puntigliosi e attenti per far si che questi produttori tirassero fuori il meglio. Per quanto riguarda la registrazione vera e propria, abbiamo fatto tutto nel nostro studio personale e abbiamo molti bei ricordi legati a questo periodo perché alla fine, tra scrittura, registrazione e produzione fino al rilascio con Nuclear Blast ci sono voluti ben tre anni. Ed è stato molto divertente avere vari guest per aiutarci come su "Starlight". Vorrei inoltre cogliere l'occasione per ringraziare ancora Chris Rörland (chitarrista dei Sabaton) che ha registrato la chitarra ritmica per alcune delle nostre canzoni e per aver fatto anche l'artwork per il disco, è stato molto divertente lavorare con lui.

Il vostro nome è strettamente collegato a quello dei Sabaton per diverse ragioni, ma per qualcuno è una specie di critica, visto il vostro sound che risulta molto simile al loro. Come rispondi a questo?

Non ho alcun problema con questo. Ognuno ha il diritto di pensare ciò che vuole. Ken ha scritto per e con i Sabaton, anche per questo motivo ci sono delle similitudini tra noi e loro. Detto questo posso dirti che non siamo neanche stati comparati così spesso ai Sabaton, ci sono molte altre band a cui siamo stati paragonati.

Parlando di questo, come vi siete approcciati alla cover di "Carolus Rex", considerato che si tratta di una delle canzoni più apprezzate dei Sabaton e che Ken ha contribuito alla sua scrittura?

Dato che Ken "possiede" un po' quella canzone non abbiamo cercato di adattarla al 100% al nostro stile, abbiamo solo aggiunto un po' di elementi synth. È abbastanza fedele all'originale con qualche cambiamento nell'accordatura e qualche aggiunta a livello di ritmica. La voce di Linda è completamente diversa da quella di Joakim e penso che questo faccia risaltare la nostra versione.

Parliamo di live: avete appena fatto due date di rilievo, al Graspop e al Metalfest, due tra i più importanti festival europei. Come vi siete preparati a questi grandi eventi?

Mentre scrivo queste righe abbiamo appena finito il concerto al Graspop, davanti a un pubblico incredibile. La preparazione è stata difficile perché per noi è tutto nuovo per cui abbiamo provato a pensare a tutti i nostri punti deboli e a rafforzarli il più possibile, per essere pronti a tutto. Abbiamo provato fino allo sfinimento. Dato che viaggiamo in aereo, non possiamo portare con noi tutta l'attrezzatura da palco che vorremmo, ma ci siamo comunque ingegnati per qualche soluzione che dia al nostro show qualcosa in più e possa entusiasmare il pubblico.

Restando in tema: qual è stato il primo festival cui hai assistito da fan nel pubblico? E quale performance ti ha impressionato di più? E ancora qual è il festival a cui sognate di partecipare, magari come headliner?

Sono stato a molti concerti ma non moltissimi festival, a dir la verità, ce ne sono così tanti negli ultimi anni. Sicuramente lo Stockholm Fields è stato un festival che mi è piaciuto, anche se dura solo un giorno. Ci sono andato anni fa ed è stato anche uno dei primi festival di grandi dimensioni a cui ho assistito, i Metallica erano headliner e il loro set fu bellissimo, quindi si, direi quello come miglior festival.  I grandi eventi sono fighissimi ma devo confessare che non è qualcosa che sogno di fare, non più di tanto, diciamo che non ho fantasie da grande rockstar, mi piace semplicemente suonare la batteria. Ma se dovessi scegliere un festival a cui suonare sarebbe sicuramente Wacken... quello sembra davvero un posto leggendario in cui suonare.

Avete in programma un tour completo, magari con qualche data italiana?

Non abbiamo ancora nulla di certo e pianificato al 100% ma ci stiamo lavorando, questo è sicuro. Speriamo di ottenere qualche data in supporto a un nome importante e qualche data in Italia.

Come ho già detto, speriamo di poter venire presto a suonare nel vostro paese. Non vediamo l'ora di suonare per voi, visitare l'Italia e mangiare del buon cibo italiano, abbiamo sentito grandi cose sulla vostra cultura del mangiar bene. Hi and welcome to SpazioRock! Let's start right away by talking about you, Follow The Cipher: you're breaking into the music industry and seem ready to rock it to the ground with your debut album. How would you describe the path that led you from something that was born as a solo project to this first great achievement?

As you wrote, first was it Ken's solo project where he had recruited Linda. After a while did he and Linda felt that it would be even more fun to have a real band so Ken asked three guys if they wanted to join and they did, it was actually Björn, Jocke and Daniel from Twilight Force. That didn't last long though because Twilight Force took to much time so it became a mutual decision to go separate ways, but still as good friends. The search for other members started so Ken did come up with the idea to ask Viko if he wanted to join FTC. Ken and Viko had worked together before during the time when Viko played in Mashima and Ken mixed an album for them. Ken wanted Viko as a songwriter and guitar player, and happily he said yes. Then there was a need for a bass player and a drummer. Ken came up with the idea to ask Jonas, who he had some connection with since before. Jonas said yes on one condition and that was if he could bring me with him to the band as the drummer. Everybody said yes to that so since January 2015 have we been Follow The Cipher as it looks now.

Your debut album has just been released: best and worst emotions that you felt lately?

When we played Metalfest a few weeks ago, we had a signing session. The response there was overwhelming and it came a lot more people than expected, that felt really great. The worst feeling would be connected to not live up to the expectations at the live shows. We have only played a handful of shows, and to do those shows at these massive festivals that we've gotten the opportunity to play at feels a bit surrealistic...It's hard to feel like you earn it. But we'll do our best and everything feels more relaxed by every show that passes.

What do you think are the songs from "Follow The Cipher" that you feel to recommend to a listener in order to approach your music?

I'll pick three songs then: "Valkyria", "Winterfall" and "Play With Fire". "Valkyria" is written by both Ken and Viko and it has all those key elements that is FTC, so that would be the number one track I recommend. "Winterfall" was the first track that Ken wrote so there you also have a great introduction. Last but not least would I say "Play With Fire". It's written by Viko and was the last track that was finished when it comes to the writing process before the album was recorded. That track is also at the moment my personal favorite.

If you asked me I would choose "Winterfall" too and I would add "The Rising", as they seem to be empowering, monumental songs that can be considered a manifesto of your sound and show the world what you're capable of. Would you agree?

Well... I answered "Winterfall" myself in the question above so there I agree fully. The Rising is also an awesome track and I think a few members of the band would have chosen that song as one of their favorite as well.

"Follow The Cipher" is definitely an album which takes elements from different music genres. What were your aims during the writing process for this record? And do you have any major references in general?

I wasn't involved in the writing process so this question's a bit hard to answer, but the aim I guess was to create some kickass tracks with a really modern and bombastic sound. From what I've heard from Ken and Viko do they not have a goal to sound like any other band but they have some artists/musicians that they've praised and probably gotten inspiration from subconsciously.
In Flames was the band that Ken said made him inspired to write harder music and he often talks positive about the composer Hans Zimmer. Vikos favorite artists is Devin Townsend.

The album has a powerful, variegated sound. Let's talk production and give us more details about the way you worked on the record in order to achieve this result and how you balanced your role during the writing process. Do you have special memories related to this period?

Glad that you like the sound! On this album are there actually three different persons who have mixed and mastered the songs due to different reasons. But it's Ken who mixed and mastered Winterfall. We actually re-recorded that one for the album, but we felt that the new version didn't reach/ or passed the level of Kens first version feeling-wise, so we went with that one. Then it's Buster Douglas Odeholm who mixed "The Rising", "Carolus Rex" and "Valkyria".. and last but not least is it Alexander Backe Backlund who mixed the rest of the songs.
The sound/mixing-quality comes with a combination of the producers being the mixing masters they are and Ken and Viko being really picky and pushing these producers to bring out the best of them self.
When it comes to the actual recording process we recorded everything our self in our own home studios. Regarding special memories, there's many because the total time for making this album from writing the songs to releasing it through NB is roughly three years. But it was really fun to have all the guest musicians helping us doing their thing on Starlight. An extra shoutout goes to Chris Rörland who also recorded rhythm guitars on some of the other songs and also made our artwork for the album.. It was really fun working with him!

Your name in strictly linked to Sabaton for a number of reasons, but somebody says that as a criticism, referring to the similarities of your sounds. How would you respond to this?

I have no problem with that. People are allowed to think what they want. Ken has written stuff for/with Sabaton as well so of course there's some similarities. With that said has there actually not been so many people that has compared us to Sabaton.There have been other bands that we've been compared to more.

Speaking of this, how did you approach your version of "Carolus Rex", considering that it is one of Sabaton's most appreciated songs and that Ken co-wrote it?

Because we/Ken also "own" the song a bit didn't we try to "Cipherize" it too much with those cutting through synth-elements. It's pretty close to the original with some changes in tuning and we added some rhythmical changes. Linda's voice is also completely different compared to Joakim's so that also made this version stand out enough I think.

Let's talk about live music: you have a couple of great shows upcoming, at Graspop and Metalfest, two of the most important European festivals. How are you getting prepared for these big events?

When writing this have we just finished of the gig at Graspop in front of an amazing crowd. Preparing is pretty hard because we're new at this, but we try to think of everything that can go wrong and prepare for that. We've also rehearsed as much as possible. Because we're flying to the shows is it hard to bring a lot of production/stage props but we're trying our best to find nifty solutions to make the show stand out and to be something extra for the audience.

What was the first festival you attended as a fan in the audience? What was the most impressive performance you saw there? And what is the festival you've always dreamt to play at as headliner?

Hmm, I have been to many concerts but not so many festivals, it has become more of them in later years. But Stockholm Fields was a one day festival that I attended a few years ago, I think that was one of the first big festivals I went to. Metallica did headline there and they did a really good show so I would say that was the most impressive one. It's really cool to play these awesome big festivals but it isn't something I dreamt of doing, I have never had that rockstar fantasy really, I just love playing drums. But if I had to pick one festival would I say Wacken... That seems like a legendary gig.

Do you have any plans for a full tour, maybe with some Italian dates?

Nothing's planned to the fullest yet, but we're at the moment looking into it. Hopefully do we get a support-slot to a bigger band this autumn where Italy is included.
