Beh, non proprio... ho visitato il vostro paese così tante volte, ma devo ancora migliorare!

Parliamo del fatto che sia molto rock'n'roll da parte tua avere una laurea in chimica, stai per caso pianificando una carriera di riserva come scienziato?

Guarda, alla mia età non pianifico più nulla, ma è vero, ho due master, e ho appena finito un corso di francese, quindi la prossima sfida potrebbe essere quella di imparare bene la vostra lingua!

All'orizzonte per ora c'è il tour di "Universal Monsters", vi ci è voluto un bel po' di tempo per tornare a farci visita, ma ti ricordi ancora la tua prima volta in Italia?

Era il 1992, poco dopo Natale, mi ricordo che il Papa aveva tenuto quella cerimonia all'aperto... in realtà me la persi, ma da allora sono tornato molte volte, ho una lunga storia d'amore con Roma e la sua scena gotica... e poi ci abbiamo suonato, e le nostre visite sono diventate più casuali.

Parlando di influenze e ispirazioni, so che le città Italiane sono sempre state una grande parte di tutto ciò.

E non solo... Il gusto degli italiani per rock'n'roll, il cibo, le belle donne...

Ho anche scovato questa canzone incredibile chiamata "Blackbird Pie", con le voci dei nativi americani che risuonano tra flauti e melodie celtiche.. come ti è venuto in mente qualcosa di così inusuale per una rock band?

Il fatto è che noi non ci poniamo dei limiti. Più influenze riusciamo a comprendere nella nostra musica più risulta fedele a ciò che sono i The 69 Eyes. Siamo interessati ad un sacco di cose diverse, alle differenze culturali... e una volta che traduciamo tutto questo in musica ne esce qualcosa che nessun altro ha mai fatto, qualcosa di veramente unico. Finiamo per sorprendere i nostri fan, o le persone che capitano per caso nel nostro radar, questo è il nostro modo di vedere la vita e le cose che ci circondano. Amiamo ogni tipo di musica, potremmo anche fare un album reggae prima o poi... ma sarebbe strano per i nostri fan... è per questo che ho dei side projects come i The 69 Cats, con loro faccio Rockabilly - per non mescolare troppo le cose e preservare la nostra identità.

Il vostro contesto musicale è cambiato molto nel corso degli anni. Molte delle vostre canzoni sono stati successi radiofonici in Finlandia in passato, ma al giorno d'oggi sembra che questo approccio alla musica stia lentamente morendo.

Sì. Per esempio i pezzi da sei minuti che abbiamo scritto non sono il tipo di canzoni che bisognerebbe scrivere per i passaggi in radio... Un tempo, e ti parlo di 18 anni fa, un nostro pezzo divenne incredibilmente noto grazie ai passaggi in radio; fu molto emozionante, perché una volta che il brano viene riprodotto dalla radio la gente iniziò a venire ai concerti, iniziammo ad essere notati più facilmente, poi abbiamo scritto un album e abbiamo iniziato a vendere molto bene, abbiamo ottenuto un singolo d'oro, un disco d'oro e un disco di platino. Dopodiché abbiamo cercato di farlo accadere di nuovo, abbiamo cercato di volare ancora più in alto, così abbiamo dato il via ad una serie di collaborazioni con persone che sembrava potessero portare la nostra musica oltre i confini della Finlandia, nel resto del mondo. E' stato divertente, è stato come essere un team si scienziati che crea usando la chimica! Ma ora quei giorni sono lontani... abbiamo girato parecchio, viaggiato molto, suonato in luoghi leggendari, stretto amicizie con qualsiasi grande band si sia mescolata con le nostre vite... ora è tutto diverso, e di certo non si ottiene più molto dall'airplay radiofonico. Questo mondo non ha più nulla a che fare con noi, si tratta di un cambio generazionale, quel che vogliamo è solo creare musica per i nostri fans e per noi stessi, questo è diventato il vero significato dell' esistenza di questa band. Noi suoniamo moltissimo dal vivo qui in Finlandia, la gente sa che si divertirà in nostra compagnia, e noi vogliamo solo passare de bei momenti e goderceli, non siamo mai stati né abbiamo mai mirato ad essere macchine da soldi.

Una volta hai detto che ti sarebbe piaciuto da morire vedere delle mini action figures di voi stessi... ed effettivamente poi è successo, adesso è addirittura possibile comprarle. Qual è il tuo prossimo desiderio?

Ti dirò, posso ritenermi soddifatto. Siamo stati ovunque e abbiamo fatto tutto, per noi la cosa più importante rimane creare nuova musica. Vogliamo scrivere un nuovo album e anche se non è affatto pronto, posso dirti che faremo uscire un nuovo singolo in autunno, e sarà il nostro primo singolo di Natale di sempre. La musica è già scritta ed è una grande canzone! Sai, tutte le grandi band hanno sempre fatto ucire la canzone di Natale, o addirittura l'album Natalizio. La nostra sarà "Christmas in New York City", e ha tutti gli elementi tipici, ma fa anche riflettere sul fatto che il Natale possa essere visto come un momento davvero solitario dell'anno, soprattutto se immaginate come ci possa sentire a passarlo da soli in un posto come New York.

So che sei un grande fan di fumetti e film. Se potessi scegliere un film che hai amato e ri-scriverne la colonna sonora utilizzando le vostre canzoni quale sceglieresti?

Oh, penso che il film di Sorrentino, "La Grande Bellezza" sarebbe perfetto per le canzoni dell'ultimo album. Quel film mi ha sbalordito nel modo più assoluto. Abbiamo questa canzone intitolata "Dolce Vita" ed è stata ispirata proprio da quel film. Adoro anche i film di Fellini, e sarebbe fantastico collaborare con i vostri registi, con persone incredibili come Paolo Sorrentino in futuro. Gli italiani hanno avuto e hanno tutt'ora una grande influenza sulla nostra cultura musicale. Per esempio "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" veniva passata continuamente dalle radio finlandesi negli anni '50 e negli anni '60 e molti dei vostri brani italiani sono perifno stati tradotti in finlandese. E succede ancora, io so Volaaaareee!!! Ho davvero bisogno di visitare Roma una volta l'anno, ho bisogno di andare lì e riempire la mia anima... amo Pasolini e tutti i vostri grandi attori. E che dire dei film horror? Non sarebbero nulla senza Dario Argento!

Prossimamente vi vedremo in Italia, manca poco! Cosa possono aspettarsi i fan i dalla scaletta?

Sarà uno dei nostri show più classici. Suoneremo anche un paio di canzoni dal nuovo album... io adoro sentirvi cantare insieme a noi.

First of all welcome back to SpazioRock, our last chat was in 2016, has your italian improved in the meantime?

Well, not really, I've visited your country so many times but still I have to improve! 

I know some very interesting facts about you, it's pretty rock'n'roll to have a masters degree in analytical chemistry, are you planning a fallback career as a scientist?

Well, at this age I don't plan anything anymore, but it's true, I have two masters degrees, and I have just finished my last exam for a degree in french last week. Next thing I could do is to study Italian!

You got the next leg of "Universal Monsters" promo tour comin up, it took you a while to come back to our country, when was the first time you came here?

It was 1992, just after Christmas, the Pope was having this huge celebration in Rome, I missed that but since then I've been there tons of times, I have a long love story with this city and its gothic scene. Later on we also played there with the band, and our visits have become more random.

Talking about influences and inpirations, I know Italian cities have always been a huge part of it.

The taste of Italians for rock'n'roll and food, beautiful women...

I have also found this unbelievable song called "Blackbird Pie", with native american sounding vocals and flutes and celtic melodies.. how did you come up with something so unsual for a rock band?

The fact is we have no limits. The more sources we have for our music the more 69 Eyes it becomes. We are interested in a lot of different things like cultural differences, and once we put them into music it becomes something unique nobody else has done. We end up surprising our fans, or people getting into our radar, that's just how we see life and things. We love every kind of music, we could also do a reggae album but it would be weird for our fans... that's why I have side projects. I have a rockabilly band called The 69 Cats.

Your musical enviroment has changed a lot through the years. Many of your songs have been radio hits in Finland back in the days, and nowadays it looks like this approach to music is slowly dying.

Yes. For instance some six minutes songs we wrote are not the kind of songs you write if you want airplay. We managed to write one song that was played by the Finnish radio 18 years ago and that was exciting, cause once your song is played by the radio people start to come to the shows, you get noticed, and after that came a record and some more songs were picked for the radio, and we started to sell very well, we got a gold single, a gold album and a platinum album. After that we tried to make it happen again, we tried to get even higher, so we started to co-write songs with people who really seemed to bring more to our music  to reach not only Finland but also the rest of the world. It was fun, it was like working as scientists using chemistry! But now those days are gone, we've been around, traveled a lot, played legendary venues, became friends with every great band around... now the enviroment has changed and we don't get much more music played on radio. It has nothing to do with us, it's a generational change, so we just make music for our fans and for ourselves, this has become the real meaning of the existence of this band. We play a lot of shows here in Finland, we just want to have a good time and play live, we have never wanted to become money-making machines.

Once you said that you were looking forward to see small action figures of yourselves shown in a horror museum and now there is actually a small version of the band on sale! I wonder what is your next wish.

Well I am pretty satisfied, we've been everywhere and done everything, to us the most important thing remains to release new music. We want to write a new album and although it's not written at all we're gonna have a new single out in the fall, and it's gonna be our first Christmas single ever. The music is already written and it's a great song! You know all the greatest bands have always released a Christmas song, or even a Christmas album. The song is called "Christmas in New York City", and it has all the cool elements, but if you think about it, Christmas can also be seen as a really lonely time of the year, especially if you picture yourself in such a huge place like New York City.

I know you're a huge fan of comics and movies. If you could choose a very good movie you loved and re-write the soundtrack or use your songs for that, which one would you pick?

Oh, I think Sorrentino's movie, "La grande Bellezza", would be perfect for the songs of the last album. That movie really blew my mind. We have this song called "Dolce Vita" and it was inspired by that movie. I also love Fellini's movies, and it would be fantastic to cooperate with your amazing directors like Sorrentino in the future. You Italian have big influence on our musical background cause songs like "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu" were played by the radios in the 50s and in the 60s and many of your italian songs were translated in Finnish. And it still happens, I know Volaaaareee!!! I really need to visit Rome once a year, I need to go there and fill my soul... I love Pasolini too and your actors as well. Horror movies wouldn't be anything without Dario Argento!

Next shows in Italy will be in May, what can the fans expect from the setlist?

It will be a classic 69 shows, we will play a couple of songs from the new album... I love to see the fans sing along.
